Vol. 52 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Attack on Young Man in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether he has received a report that at 7.40 on Wednesday, the 9th May, at Gardiner's Row a young man was set upon by six men armed with batons and pokers and brutally beaten and that he had to receive hospital treatment; and if he will state whether the persons guilty of this offence have been identified and charged.

I have received a report that a man was attacked and injured at Gardiner's Row on the night of the 9th May and that he was treated at Jervis Street Hospital. No persons have yet been charged with the offence.

Is an endeavour being made to trace the persons who are guilty of the offence?

The Deputy is well aware that the police are doing their utmost to trace the people responsible for all the disturbances that are being caused by him and his Party through the country.

Is the Minister aware that the only thing which in many cases we have evidence of is the fact that, although many weeks have passed, they have not identified the persons, have not charged them, or brought them to justice?

It is undoubtedly true that, notwithstanding all the efforts which the police are putting into the discovery of the people who are causing disturbances, they have failed in a number of instances. In a large number of instances, however, their efforts have proved successful. The Government, as a whole, hopes that the police will be successful in their efforts to trace all the persons who are causing disturbances throughout the country, and put them in jail where they should be.

I can have the Minister's assurance that this particular question is not being lost sight of, and that this matter will be further inquired into?

The Government's policy is quite well known to the Deputy. Their policy is to trace those responsible for all crime in the country and, if possible, to bring them to justice.
