Vol. 53 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Building Trades.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the numbers of (1) carpenters; (2) bricklayers; (3) stone-cutters and masons; (4) plasterers; (5) painters; (6) plumbers; (7) builders' labourers unemployed in the City and County of Dublin on the 31st of March, 1934, and the 31st March, 1933.

Statistics are not available to show by county of residence and by occupation the numbers of persons seeking work; they are available only by employment exchanges and branch employment offices. The following are the numbers of persons whose occupation was given as shown in the first column of the table below who were registered as seeking work at the Dublin Employment Exchange, the Dun Laoghaire Employment Exchange and the Balbriggan Branch Employment Office (the three offices situated in Dublin County) at 3rd April, 1933, and 3rd April, 1934.

As the rest of the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose to circulate it in the Official Report.

With reference to the Minister's statement with regard to the areas, will he say whether the figures refer to areas which are similar areas in respect to which he has given information in previous years?

I should imagine the information given in previous years related to the number of such persons registered at one or other of the employment exchanges, probably in Dublin City.

And not Dun Laoghaire?

I would like to have notice of that. I could not say offhand.
