Vol. 53 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Benefit.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that John Deegan, of 79 Annamoe Drive, Cabra, Class No. 485 (Hatch No. 28 U.A.) made application for benefit under the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933; that he received 6/- a week benefit, which has since been withdrawn, and if he will state the reasons why benefit has not been continued in this case.

John Deegan, 79 Anuamoe Drive, Cabra, made application for unemployment assistance on April 25th, 1934. His claim was disallowed by the unemployment assistance officer on the ground that the applicant failed to satisfy the conditions of Section 15 (1) (b) of the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, namely, that he was capable of work, and genuinely seeking but unable to obtain suitable employment.

Mr. Deegan lodged an appeal on July 12th against the decision given on his application, and his appeal was considered by the Court of Referees, which sat on August 1st. Mr. Deegan attended and gave evidence in support of his claim. The Court recommended that payment of assistance be allowed. The unemployment assistance officer accepted the recommendation of the Court, and accordingly payment of assistance will be made to Mr. Deegan in respect of any period of continuous unemployment proved by him, subject to the fulfilment of the statutory conditions for the receipt of unemployment assistance.

Could the Minister say what benefit is going to be given?

I am afraid I cannot answer that question. His appeal against the decision of the unemployment assistance officer has been allowed by the Court of Referees, and if he fulfils the statutory conditions for the receipt of benefit he is now entitled to draw it.
