Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Given in House Building.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if, regarding the statement issued by the Minister for Industry and Commerce in the Press in the month of October about "Unemployment in the Free State" he will state the number of houses under construction in each of the years 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, and the estimated number for 1934; and to estimate for each of these years in terms of average numbers of persons employed weekly (1) the direct employment, and (2) the indirect employment given thereby, and to indicate the seasonal fluctuation in such employment by giving for each quarter of 1933 and 1934 the average number (1) directly, and (2) indirectly employed thereby.

The statistics available in my Department refer only to houses in respect of which subsidies are payable. The figures are in the form of a tabular statement and will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

The number of such houses completed and in progress during the years ended 31st March, 1930; 31st March, 1931; 31st March, 1932; 31st March, 1933, and 31st March, 1934, are as follows:—

The average number of persons employed monthly on housing schemes carried out by local authorities during the quarter ended 31st March, 1933, 2,471; during the quarter ended 30th June, 1933, 4,043; during the quarter ended, 30th September, 1933, 5,553; during the quarter ended 31st December, 1933, 6,827; during the quarter ended 31st March, 1934, 7,878; during the quarter ended 30th June, 1934, 7,676; during the quarter ended 30th September, 1934, 7,704.

Statistics of persons employed in the construction of houses for private persons and public utility societies are not available in my Department.

No figures are available with regard to indirect employment afforded by housing schemes.
