Vol. 55 No. 1

In Committee on Finance. - Aliens Bill, 1934—Money Resolution.

I move:—

That, for carrying into effect any Act of the present Session to provide for the control of aliens and for other matters relating to aliens, it is expedient to authorise the payment out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas of any expenses incurred being expenses which are required by the provisions of such Act to be defrayed out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas.

What is the amount of money considered likely to be spent under this motion? There is generally a statement to that effect.

I do not think any complete estimate would be worth while giving now.

I only want the approximate sum.

It is not anticipated that a very large sum will be required in the way of ordinary expenses.

Is there any knowledge at all of the likely sum?

No. There is nothing definite. The staff is there, and anything else is likely to be covered by fees.

What form would the motion take, to appropriate a sum of money, the nature of which, or the size of which no one knows?

That is on the Order Paper in the usual form.

It is usual to qualify the statement by giving the approximate sum.

Everyone knows in matters of this sort, unless it is anticipated that expenditure on a large scale is likely to be incurred, that the existing staff carry out all the work required, and that any other expenses are likely to be covered by fees. There is no anticipation of any serious charge on the revenue. At the same time, it is necessary to have this motion passed.

After a certain amount of cross-examination we have a statement that any likely expenditure will be covered by fees. That was not stated at the beginning.

Question put and agreed to.
