Vol. 55 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Apprenticeship Committees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state how many and what apprenticeship committees have been established under the provisions of the Apprenticeship Act, 1931, and whether in each case the functions of the apprenticeship committees extend throughout the whole area of Saorstát Eireann; further, if he will state the number of appointed members serving on each such committee and the terms of appointment and the rate of remuneration of each appointed member.

Apprenticeship committees under the Apprenticeship Act, 1931, have been established in the hairdressing trade and in the furniture trade, the area in each case being the administrative County of Dublin and the County Borough of Dublin. Two appointed members will serve on each committee. The chairman, who is one of the appointed members, will hold office during the pleasure of the Minister. The other appointed members will hold office for the term prescribed in the regulation for each committee, namely, three years. It is confidently anticipated that the persons appointed will act without remuneration.

The brush and broom trade was declared in February to be a designated trade under the Apprenticeship Act, 1931, the area being the Saorstát. Regulations for the constitution of the apprenticeship committee and the personnel of the committee are under consideration.
