Vol. 55 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Travelling Expenses for Cork City Manager.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has sanctioned an application of the City Manager, Cork, for an allowance in respect of travelling expenses; if he will state what the amount of the allowance is, the reasons given for the application, the salary of the official in question and whether sanction covered retrospective payment.

An allowance for the maintenance of a motor car used in the discharge of his official duties was sanctioned for the City Manager of Cork in July, 1933. The amount of the allowance is £75 a year. The reason for the allowance was that the City Manager had to use his own car on municipal business, and part of the cost of maintaining a car was, therefore, properly chargeable against public funds. The salary of the City Manager is £1,200 a year. Sanction had not retrospective effect.

Mr. Murphy

Can the Minister say if the Corporation had anything to do with the recommendation for this allowance or is it not a fact that the City Manager allowed this money to himself first and then asked the Minister to sanction it?

I cannot answer that, but if the Deputy puts down a question I will answer it.

Mr. Murphy

If the Minister will look into the case I think he will see my point.
