Vol. 55 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deep Sea Fishery Imports.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the years 1929 to 1934 inclusive the value of the imports from deep sea fisheries, the nature of such imports, and if there is a tendency for such imports to decline in recent years whether he can state to what the decline is attributed.

According to the returns furnished, the value of the imports from deep sea fisheries in the years 1929 to 1934 were:—

£

1929

2,479

1930

868

1931

860

1932

33

1933

16,343

1934

3,227

For the years 1929 to 1932 the imports were not segregated into kinds. In the year 1933 the imports were described as—Cod, £3,770; hake, £4,765; other sorts of fresh or frozen fish, £7,808. For 1934 separate descriptions were not required to be declared.

Arising out of the reply can the Minister inform the House the reason for the colossal increase in these imports in the year 1933?

That question should be addressed to the Minister for Agriculture.

So then the Minister for Industry and Commerce is not aware of the reason for the increase in the figures?

My function in that regard has to do with the statistics.
