Vol. 56 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ratification of Conventions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is the intention of the Government to ratify the conventions drafted by the International Labour Conferences concerning hours of work in industry, child-birth, placing of seamen, white lead, workmen's compensation for accidents, night-work in bakeries, sickness insurance in industry and in agriculture, hours of work in commerce and offices, hours of work in coal mines, protection of dockers against accidents, and minimum age of employment in non-industrial employment; and whether it will be necessary to introduce proposals for legislation for that purpose; and, if so, when it is his intention to submit such proposals.

It is proposed to implement the Hours of Work in Industry Convention in the Conditions of Employment Bill, in respect of the classes of workers covered in that Bill. A special Bill will be introduced at an early date with the object of implementing the Night Work in Bakeries Convention. The Convention concerning the protection of dockers adopted in 1929 was ratified in 1930. The ratification of the revised Convention adopted in 1932 is under consideration. The Convention prohibiting the use of white lead in internal painting is being further examined. It is not proposed at present to ratify the other Conventions mentioned by the Deputy.
