Vol. 56 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Position of Town Tenants.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he can now state when it is intended to introduce proposals for legislation dealing with the position of town tenants.

I have nothing to add at present to my reply to a question on the same subject asked by Deputy Nally on the 27th March last.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would he say whether there is any serious intention to introduce legislation dealing with the position of town tenants?

I stated in reply to Deputy Nally on a previous occasion that an Inter-Departmental Committee had examined this and had reported. When that report has been fully considered I will be in a position to give a definite answer to the Deputy.

Is the Minister not in a position to say when it is likely that the Committee's Report will be considered and also when it is likely that we will have legislation on the subject?

It is being considered, but I cannot give a definite answer to the Deputy.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, can he state whether that Committee has taken within its terms of reference the question of the rents of slum rooms and tenement rooms, and if, when its recommendations reach him and are considered, he will take steps to remedy any abuses that may have arisen in connection with the rents charged for that type of habitation?

All those matters will be considered.
