Vol. 56 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational Education.

asked the Minister for Education whether his attention has been directed to the resolution adopted by the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee requesting him to bring into operation the compulsory clauses of the Vocational Education Act, 1930, and to provide additional school accommodation for the students which the enforcement of the compulsory sections of the Act would bring into the schools, and whether it is his intention to give effect to terms of the resolution.

An inter-departmental Committee has been inquiring into the problems connected with the raising of the age of compulsory attendance at school. I expect to receive the report of the Committee soon and, until it has been considered, I am not prepared to indicate what action may be taken on the request of the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee to bring into operation the compulsory clauses of the Vocational Education Act, 1930.

Regarding the provision of the necessary additional school accommodation, I wish to point out that this is part of the statutory duty imposed on the Vocational Education Committee and it cannot be disposed of by requesting the State to undertake the responsibility.
