Vol. 56 No. 16

Written Answers. - Kilkenny Unemployment Assistance Claims.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the circumstances in which the payment of the claim to unemployment assistance of James Moran, Gurteen, Grettyard, Castlecomer, County Kilkenny, was suspended, and what steps are being taken to resume payment; further, if he will state if the claim will be paid in respect of the period of its suspension.

James Moran, of Grettyard, Carlow, made application for unemployment assistance on the 8th September, 1934. His application was duly authorised and he received payment thereon up to the 2nd April last. Information then reached the Department which necessitated certain inquiries into the validity of Mr. Moran's claim. These inquiries have taken time to pursue, and the facts which they have elicited have required careful consideration. Meanwhile, payment of assistance to Mr. Moran has had to be suspended. The matter has now been settled by making certain adjustments on Mr. Moran's application, and payment of assistance to him will be resumed at an early date. He will receive any assistance for which he may have qualified since payment was suspended.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that in January last payment of the claim to unemployment assistance of Patrick Barry, Walkin Street, Kilkenny, was suspended following the receipt at the Employment Exchange of an anonymous communication, whether payment is still suspended; and, if so, whether he will state the reason for such a long delay in investigating the allegations contained in an anonymous communication where the parties are easily available for the purpose of the investigation.

Patrick Barry, Walkin Street, Kilkenny, made application for unemployment assistance on the 6th July last. His application was authorised for payment and payment was actually made to him up to and including the 8th January last. Information then reached the Department which necessitated certain inquiries into the validity of Mr. Barry's claim. These inquiries were of a protracted nature and the facts which they elicited required careful consideration. Meanwhile, payment of assistance to Mr. Barry has had to be suspended. The questions at issue have now been determined and the matter has been settled by making certain adjustments on Mr. Barry's application. Payment of assistance to him will be resumed at an early date.
