Written Answers. - Civil Service Staffs.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state the number of civil servants, distinguishing between males and females, employed in the following grades:— (1) Secretaries of Departments or equivalent rank; (2) assistant secretaries; (3) principal officers; (4) assistant principal officers; (5) administrative officers; (6) higher executive officers; (7) junior executive officers; (8) staff officers on scales proceeding to (a) £450 and over, (b) £400, (c) £350, (d) £300, (e) less than £300; (9) clerical officers—(a) general service, (b) departmental; (10) employment clerks; (11) typists and shorthand typists (including superintendents)—(a) general service, (b) departmental; (12) writing assistants—(a) general service, (b) departmental; and (13) temporary officers employed on duties analogous to those enumerated.

The returns of Civil Service staffs give particulars of staff serving on the first working day of each calendar year. The information requested is given in the following tabular statement, which relates to the 1st January, 1935:—

It is assumed that Query No. 5 is intended to relate to Junior Administrative Officers.

The numbers stated in reply to Query No. 13 relate to Temporary Clerks employed on duties of the type normally performed by members of the classes referred to in Nos. 9, 10 and 12 of the question.
