Vol. 58 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Claremorris Labourers' Cottages Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state (a) the cause of the delay in proceeding with the building of labourers' cottages in Claremorris; (b) the number of cottages to be erected; and (c) the cost of the erection of such cottages.

(a) The Mayo Board of Health appear to be proceeding as quickly as possible with the scheme of labourers' cottages in Claremorris area; (b) four cottages are in an advanced stage of construction on sites acquired under the board's voluntary scheme. Thirty-eight cottages are to be built at Lisnaboley and six at Cherryfield on sites being acquired compulsorily; (c) at the board's meeting in May tenders were received for the cottages to be built on the sites acquired compulsorily. The board considered the tender for the Cherryfield group excessive and decided to readvertise. The tender accepted for the Lisnaboley group was considered excessive by the Department and the board were instructed to readvertise in this case also. Fresh tenders are due for consideration by the board at their meeting on 20th instant. Accordingly, at this stage it is not possible to state the cost of erection of these cottages.
