Vol. 59 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Increased Tram Fares.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the Dublin United Tramways Company increased its fares substantially during recent months; whether he has taken any steps to ascertain the grounds on which these increases are based; whether he is aware that the increased fares are inflicting great hardships on working people who reside a considerable distance from their place of employment; and whether he proposes to take any action to prevent a continuance of this hardship.

I am aware that increases in fares have recently been made by the Dublin United Tramways Company and have had the matter under close consideration with the company. The examination of the information which has been put forward by the company in justification of the increases is now nearly completed but I am not yet in a position to make a statement on the matter.

From such information as he has obtained is the Minister satisfied that these increases are justified?

I have said I am not in a position to say.

If the Minister feels that these increases are not justified will he put into operation his motion for the nationalisation of transport in Dublin as advocated by him in 1931?

That is much wider than the original question.
