Vol. 59 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Road Work in Clare.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he received a resolution from the Clare County Council requesting a grant of £3,000 from the Road Fund for road work in the county; if he is aware that the county council is prepared to make a contribution of a similar amount for this work from the County Fund, and if, with a view to relieving the unemployment at present existing in the county, he will make available the amount requested.

A resolution was received from the Clare County Council on the 13th instant asking for a grant of £3,000 for road work for the relief of unemployment at Christmas, towards which the county council would contribute a like amount, the latter amount to be raised in the rates for the year 1936/37. The proposal is not one to obtain a grant from the Road Fund but from the Relief Vote. It will not be possible to make such a grant (from the Vote) for road works. Steps are, however, being taken to make a grant out of the £30,000 available for road relief work for all road authorities. It is likely that grants amounting in all to £1,000, covering both the county and the urban districts in the council, will be notified shortly.
