Vol. 59 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep and Cattle Levies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is prepared to consider the advisability of considerably reducing the levy on small Kerry cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether in the light of the effect which the present levy has had on the sale of horned sheep he will consider the advisability of reducing the levy to 2/- per head.

The question of reducing the levy on the smaller varieties of cattle and sheep which the Deputy raises in questions Nos. 9 and 10 is one which has been engaging my closest attention for a considerable time past. I regret I see no practicable way of making any changes during the current financial year in the existing basis of levy. I am considering whether after next March some other arrangement could not be made in regard to the levy on cattle and sheep which would have the effect of meeting the position to which the Deputy refers.
