Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defective Children.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the number of defective children under the age of 15 years, other than idiots or imbeciles, who are under care in institutions for the reception of cases of mental deficiency and in poor law institutions, respectively.

On the 31st December, 1934, the latest date for which full statistical particulars are available, the number of mentally defective children, other than idiots and imbeciles, under 15 years of age who were under care in poor law and other institutions was 275 (142 boys and 133 girls). They were resident in the following institutions:— Poor law institutions, 268 (137 boys and 131 girls); St. Vincent's School and Home, Cabra, seven (five boys and two girls).
