Vol. 60 No. 5

In Committee on Finance—Supplementary Estimates. - Vote No. 39—Public Records Office.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £350 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1936, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí Oifig na nAnnálacha Puiblí agus Coimeádaí na Stát-Pháipéar, Baile Atha Cliath (30 agus 31 Vict., c. 70; 38 agus 39 Vict., c. 59, agus 39 agus 40 Vict., c. 58).

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £350 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1936, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Public Records Office and of the Keeper of State Papers, Dublin (30 and 31 Vict., c. 70; 38 and 39 Vict., c. 59 and 39 and 40 Vict., c. 58).

This sum is required to meet an expenditure on the purchase of books of historical interest on the 24th and 25th of June last in London. I have the catalogue here, and if any Deputy is interested in it he can see the nature of the books purchased. These books are of considerable value. I might give one as an example: "Abstract of Information from the Prerogative Office in Ireland from the Earliest Records, 1800." There are 60 volumes in that. It is for the purchase of those books that this money is required.

Am I to understand that the purchases are represented by that considerable catalogue in the Minister's hand?

No. I have the items here in a separate sheet.

Perhaps the Minister would be good enough to circulate the nature and the titles of the volumes not so much for the information of Deputies as for the information of the public.

All these particulars appear in the return issued—the last report was published in 1931. The report is now being prepared, and I hope it will be ready in a few months. That will give all the information as to what documents are in the Records Office. I do not think the catalogue itself would be of much assistance.

I do not press the matter, but the Minister might consider the desirability of causing a list of those purchases to be made and left in the Library, where any interested Deputy may go and peruse it.

Very well.

Vote agreed to and ordered to be reported.
