Vol. 60 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Able-bodied Assistance in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the total number of (a) men and (b) women who were in receipt of able-bodied assistance from the Dublin Board of Assistance in each of the weeks from the week ended the 30th November, 1935, to week ended 1st February, 1936, inclusive, and the total cost of such relief in each week; and if he will state the number of (a) men and (b) women similarly relieved and the weekly cost for each of the corresponding weeks in the previous year; and if he will state what are the reasons for the increased expenditure which has been incurred this year.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement and will be circulated with the Official Report.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say if the reasons for the increased expenditure this year are set out in tabular form?

The reasons for the increased expenditure are matters for the Board of Assistance, which deal with each case according to their view of its seriousness.

Is it not a matter of concern that, at a time when so much money is being expended in unemployment assistance, increased expenditure as compared with that of last year is being incurred by the Board of Assistance in Dublin in order to deal with distress in Dublin?

There is no cause for anxiety as to the generosity of the Dublin Board of Assistance. Up to the present, I do not think that they have been over-generous as regards the allowances made.

Has the Minister for Local Government no function——

Is this concerned with the coming municipal election?

Has the Minister for Local Government no cause for anxiety in connection with the circumstances which necessitated increased expenditure by way of home assistance in the city when so much money is being spent in unemployment assistance, and has he no cause for anxiety as regards the increased number of persons applying to the Board for assistance?

The following is the reply above referred to:—
