Vol. 62 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Sugar Company's Foreign Employees.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state how many foreigners employed by the Irish Sugar Company have applied for certificates of naturalisation under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1935; the positions occupied in the Sugar Company by each such applicant, and indicate whether certificates have been or will be granted in each case.

Thirteen foreigners employed in the Irish Sugar Company, Ltd., have applied for certificates of naturalisation. Three of the applicants are described as factory managers, two as engineers, one as a machine engineer, two as chief electricians, two as evaporator cooks, one as a fitter, one as a mechanic, and one as a manipulator. Certificates of naturalisation have not so far been granted to any of the applicants. I am not at present prepared to say whether any such certificates will be granted.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, might I ask, before any decision is taken to grant naturalisation certificates in these cases, if the Minister will make sure that the interests of Irishmen are adequately safeguarded and considered in connection with this matter?

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state how many of the persons whose applications for certificates of citizenship were announced in Iris Oifigiúil on March 31st 1936, are employees of the Irish Sugar Company, and the number of employees of that company to whom certificates of citizenship were granted, and the number now under consideration.

Mr. Boland

Ten of the persons, notice of whose applications for certificates of naturalisation was published in the Iris Oifigiúil on the 31st March last, are employees of the Irish Sugar Co., Ltd. Certificates of naturalisation have not been granted to any employee of that company. The applications are under consideration.

Will the Minister say when the decision will be announced?

Mr. Boland

I cannot say that.
