Vol. 62 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Broadcasting Service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the widespread desire of Irish exiles, particularly those resident in the United States of America, to listen-in to the Dublin-Athlone broadcasting programmes; and, if so, if with a view to making such reception possible he intends to take the necessary steps for the erection of a short wave broadcasting station in the Saorstát.

I am not aware of any widespread demand for a short wave broadcasting station for reception of programmes overseas. The question of the erection of such a station has already been considered, but the heavy capital and annual expenditure which would be involved could not be justified in present circumstances.

In connection with the Minister's reply, I should like to know when he is going to increase the power of the station, which was promised some time ago.

Mr. Boland

I am not quite certain. I know, however, that they have ordered the necessary machinery.

The matter is in hands anyway?

Mr. Boland

Yes.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I should like to know if, in his opinion, it would be difficult to justify the expense involved in the erection of a station here for the benefit of our exiles, in view of the fact that all these emigrants are coming home to Ireland now to fill the positions that the Minister for Industry and Commerce promised to create for them.

Mr. Boland

The Deputy is far too witty.
