Vol. 62 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turbary for Galway Tenants.

Mr. Brodrick

asked the Minister for Lands if the Irish Land Commission have yet taken steps to provide the promised turbary for the tenants on the Benjamin Morow Estate (Record No. S.3633) near Glenamaddy, County Galway.

The question of having turbary regulations made and put into operation in this case is at the moment before the Land Commission.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that two questions in regard to this matter have been answered in the same manner as he has answered this question to-day, one as far back as a year ago and the other some time ago? Will he say if anything will be done this year to provide turbary for these particular people?

I am not aware that two previous questions have been answered in the same manner. The two previous questions were of a totally different nature. I am afraid the Deputy was not listening to my reply.

There was a question put on the 7th March, 1935——

Of a different nature.

——with regard to the provision of turbary on that particular estate. I have it here if the Parliamentary Secretary wants to hear it. I hope there is no misunderstanding. The question was really repeated in February, 1936, practically the same question with regard to the provision of turbary for people on the same estate.

I can only repeat my reply, that the question of having turbary regulations made and put into operation in this case is at the moment before the Land Commission. That is a totally different matter from what had been attempted before. Three attempts have been made in the past 12 months to provide an alternative holding for the tenant in question, but that was not found possible. The Land Commission have now decided, instead of doing that, to make turbary regulations to meet the requirements of the tenants in the district.

That is very satisfactory.
