Vol. 62 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Home-grown Cereals.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will reduce the home-grown cereals content of the maize meal mixture in view of the fact that the price of the mixture has been raised by 10/- per ton recently.

I do not propose to make any reduction such as the Deputy suggests.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he aware that the proportion of home-grown cereals which he has prescribed as being necessary to incorporate in the maize meal mixture has resulted in the price of maize meal mixture being in rural areas of the Free State to-day £8 7s. 6d. per ton, delivered in an inland town, while the price of pure maize meal in the town of Newry is £5, representing a difference of almost 3/6 on each cwt. of meal bought by the feeders of pigs, fowl and such other live stock as consume maize meal?

Dr. Ryan

Surely the Deputy himself can see the fallacy of his comparison.

Does the Minister admit that there is a difference of almost 3/6 per cwt. between the price of maize meal in Newry and the price of maize meal mixture in an inland town in this State?

Dr. Ryan

I do not know if the Deputy's figures are correct, but even if they are, the comparison that he has made is a wrong one.
