asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of persons paid unemployment assistance benefit during the first week in each of the months January to June inclusive, in each of the years 1934, 1935 and 1936.

The particulars which the Deputy requires are as follows:—

Total number of persons paid Unemployment Assistance during the week preceding the first Monday in each of the months January to June, inclusive, in each of the years 1934, 1935 and 1936.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of persons to whom the payment of unemployment assistance was discontinued arising out of the operation of the first Employment Period Order made under the Unemployment Assistance Act in the present year.

The number of applications for unemployment assistance which were disallowed up to and including the 2nd June, 1936, the latest date for which figures are available on the ground that the applicants were not unemployed within the meaning of Section 15 (1) (a) of the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, as amended, owing to the operation of the Unemployment Assistance (Employment Periods) Order, 1936, was 5,759. This figure is a cumulative total of the numbers of applications disallowed each week since the Order came into force on the 4th March, 1936.
