Vol. 62 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Cotton Sewing Thread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any complaints have reached him in regard to the quality of No. 40 cotton sewing thread offered for sale by the Westport Thread Company, and what steps he proposes to take in order to ensure that thread of proper quality is made available for Saorstát consumers.

The only complaint which I can trace as having been received in my Department regarding the No. 40 sewing cotton thread offered for sale by the Irish Sewing Cotton Company, Limited, is one relating to the dyeing of a particular shade of that thread. The matter is at present under consideration in my Department.

Is the Minister aware that thread supplied by this company, as of fast colours, ran when washed in cold water, and is he further aware that the tensile strength of the thread No. 40 produced for use on hand-sewing machines is quite unsatisfactory and makes it extremely difficult to use a hand-sewing machine at all?

I received no complaints from any quarter of the nature stated by the Deputy.
