Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Hosiery Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (1) the total number of wage-earners, not outworkers, employed in mid-October, 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934, in the hosiery industry, and the total amount paid in wages to such wage-earners in each of the years 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934, and (2) the total number of wage-earners, outworkers, employed in their own homes in mid-October, 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934, and the total amounts paid in wages to such outworkers in each of the years 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934.

The total number of wage-earners, not outworkers, employed in the hosiery industry in the Saorstat in mid-October was 1,059 in 1931, 1,336 in 1932, 1,859 in 1933, and 2,849 in 1934. The total annual amount paid in wages to wage-earners, not outworkers, was £46,083 in 1931, £53,937 in 1932, £76,902 in 1933, and £119,958 in 1934. The total number of wage-earners, outworkers, in mid-October was 823 in 1931, 644 in 1932, 526 in 1933, and 729 in 1934. The total annual amount paid in wages to wage-earners was £6,199 in 1931, £5,583 in 1932, £5,120 in 1933, and £6,800 in 1934.
