Vol. 63 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Benefit Claim.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has as yet concluded his inquiries with reference to the claim of Mr. Michael Gibbons, Gurthenacullen, Shrah, Tourmakeady, to arrears of unemployment benefit; and whether he has now ascertained that the information conveyed to him that this man received unemployment benefit while actually in employment is entirely devoid of foundation; and further to ask when the arrears due to Mr. Gibbons will be paid to him.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to him on the 2nd June, 1936, in regard to the application for unemployment assistance of Michael Gibbons. The answer to the first part of the present question is in the affirmative; the answer to the second part is in the negative. The third part of the question does not arise at present, but the Deputy may take it that if arrears of assistance are eventually found to be due, they will be paid in due course.

What steps are being taken to see whether this young man is or is not entitled to this benefit? The last time I put down a question an answer was given that he had not continued to receive benefit because he was employed during a particular period when he drew benefit. In fact, he never received this benefit for a single moment when he was at work. I would like to know what steps are being taken to verify or contradict his statement.

I presume the usual inquiries are being made through departmental channels. When I get further information I shall write to the Deputy.

It satisfies me if the Minister will look into the matter. I am satisfied that this young man is being deprived of benefit to which he is entitled.
