Vol. 63 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Waterford Hospitals.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is prepared to insist that a reasonable margin of preference will be given to local bricks in the erection of the proposed city hospital, the maternity hospital, and the extension to the mental hospital in Waterford, and whether he has taken any steps to indicate to the parties concerned his intention of doing so.

I have not yet arrived at a stage when tenders will be invited for the city hospital and the works at the mental hospital. I understand that the architect in each case has specified for the use of brick for portion of the buildings. All the factors and circumstances will be sympathetically considered when the tenders are received. As regards the concluding portion of the Deputy's question, I do not consider any steps are called for at this stage.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the cause of the delay in commencing the erection of the city hospital, the maternity hospital, and the extension to the mental hospital in Waterford, and whether he is in a position to state when the work will commence.

No unnecessary delay has taken place in connection with the city hospital and the works at the mental hospital.

I understand that sketch plans for the new city hospital were approved on the 13th May last, and that the contract drawings are at present being prepared.

The sketch plans for the works at the mental hospital have just been received and are at present under consideration.

As regards the maternity hospital, I would call the Deputy's attention to page 39 of the first general report of the Hospitals Commission. The position of this hospital will have to be considered in relation to the hospital situation in the City of Waterford and no definite decision has yet been taken in regard to it.
