Vol. 64 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Short-Wave Broadcasting Station.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if with a view to making it possible for Irish exiles, particularly those resident in the United States of America, to listen-in to the Dublin-Athlone broadcasting programme he will state if his Department has given any further consideration to the question of the erection of a short wave broadcasting station in the Saorstát; and, if so, with what result.

The question of the erection of a short wave broadcasting station has been reconsidered but it is not found practicable to proceed with the project at present. As already intimated to the Deputy, the provision of such a station would involve heavy capital and maintenance charges.

Is there any intention of proceeding with this project in the future?

The answer does not rule out future possibilities.

Is the Minister in a position to say when the power of Athlone Station will be increased in accordance with the previous promise?

That is a separate question.

Can the Minister say what would be the approximate cost of the project, if proceeded with?

About £46,000, with an additional maintenance cost of something like £15,000.
