Vol. 64 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Contracts.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state what steps are taken by his Department before grants are sanctioned under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932. to ensure that the provisions of Section 8 of the Act have been complied with where they apply.

The provisions of the section are brought to the notice of every person and public utility society applying for a grant under the Act, and local authorities have been advised to insert in the contract-documents a clause binding contractors to comply with the terms of the section.

Mr. Hogan

If the executive officer of a local authority indicates to the Local Government Department that the rates of wages being paid on a housing scheme does not comply with the section, will the Minister state what action his Department will take?

When a complaint is received by the Department, investigations are immediately made. We have had some such complaints from different parts of the country and we have succeeded—usually, after some trouble—in getting contractors to comply with the terms of the section.
