Vol. 64 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Agricultural Labourers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the average weekly earnings of permanent agricultural labourers over 21 years of age who had not free house or allowance of any kind (1) reckoned with all returns included, and (2) where returns with exceptionally low rates are included, in each county in July, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1936.

I am circulating with the Official Report a statement giving the information asked for in the first part of the Deputy's question in respect of a week in July in the years 1931, 1932, and 1936. Similar information for 1933, 1934 and 1935 has been supplied on 5th February, 1936, in reply to a question from Deputy Keyes. I do not understand the second part of the question.

Following is the statement:—

Average weekly earnings of Male Agricultural Labourers over 21 years of age permanently employed, who had not free house or allowance of any kind, during the weeks ended 11th July, 1931, 16th July, 1932, and 18th July, 1936:—

Is not the Minister aware that in previous years when making an examination of the agricultural labourers' wages paid in different parts of the country it was customary, after an estimate was made and when all the returns were considered, to set aside the returns which showed a small figure, and to make a re-estimate based on the returns that showed a larger scale of wages?

I do not think so. The Deputy asked for the average weekly earnings of agricultural labourers. I am giving him those particulars, and that is the only information I am able to supply in that respect.
