Vol. 64 No. 10

Death of Chief Justice.—Expression of Sympathy.

I deeply regret to have to inform the Dáil of the death of Aodh O Cinneide, Chief Justice of Saorstát Eireann, which occurred this morning after a brief illness.

The late Chief Justice was recognised as a great lawyer and a great judge. He was also a patriotic Irishman, who gave fine service to his country. His death is a loss to the Bench and to the nation. Go ndeanaidh Dia trocaire ar a anam.

In the name of the Dáil, I ask you a Chinn Comhairle, to convey to his widow our heartfelt sympathy in her sorrow.

This is not an occasion on which to refer to the patriotism and the services rendered by the late Mr. Hugh Kennedy, Chief Justice, but, having been associated with him for years prior to the foundation of the State, having worked with him at the foundation of the State and, subsequently, having been associated with him in building up the institutions of the State, I wish, on behalf of my colleagues and myself, to be associated with this expression of deep regret at his early death. I desire to pay a tribute to his memory, to his ability, to his patriotism and to join in the expression of condolence with his family.

Deputies rose in their places.

The Dáil adjourned at 5.15 p.m. until, as ordered, Wednesday, 3rd February, 1937.
