Vol. 65 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restriction on Travelling Shops.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been drawn to the great hardships caused to traders, and the consequent unemployment of shop assistants, by the unrestricted invasion of the towns and villages of Kerry by "travelling shops"; and, if so, whether he will introduce proposals for legislation to protect those rate-paying traders and their employees from this unfair competition.

The question of "travelling shops" was fully inquired into by the Commission on Registration of Shops. The Report of that Commission has been considered and it has been decided to introduce legislative proposals which are at present in course of preparation.

Would the Minister say if it is his intention in those legislative proposals to place difficulties in the way of travelling shops?

The Deputy had better wait and see.

Can he say when the legislation will be introduced?

I cannot say.

Will it be in this Parliament?

That depends on factors outside my control.
