Vol. 65 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Conditions of Employment Act to all Railway Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that while shopmen and milesmen employed in the railway services are entitled under the provisions of the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936, to a week's holiday with pay, in addition to the statutory bank holidays, the drivers, firemen, guards, ticket checkers and others of the conciliation grades, work on bank holidays without extra pay or holidays in lieu; and if he proposes to introduce proposals for legislation to enable the above-mentioned grades to come under the provisions of the Conditions of Employment Act in so far as they relate to holidays.

The conditions of employment of members of the conciliation grades, other than those to whom the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936, apply, engaged in the railway services are regulated in accordance with the provisions of the Railways Act, 1924. Under existing agreements these employees are entitled to one week's holiday with pay in addition to payment in respect of certain public holidays, viz., Christmas Day and Good Friday or Easter Monday. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question addressed to me by Deputy Pattison on the 18th June last, to which I have at present nothing to add.
