Vol. 65 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Summerhill Detention Home.

asked the Minister for Education if the place of detention for juveniles on remand in Summerhill has been abolished; and, if so, what alternative accommodation has been provided.

Efforts are being made to obtain better accommodation than the premises used as a place of detention for boys at Summerhill, but these efforts have not been successful. Arrangements are being made as from the end of the present month to provide a separate place of detention in Dublin for junior boys (i.e., boys under ten years of age).

Arising out of the Minister's reply, if I may take the occasion to congratulate him on his change of heart, I should also like to enquire if, when he acquires the new premises, he proposes to run the new premises on altogether more modern and efficient lines than those allowed heretofore?

I cannot accept the Deputy's hypothesis.
