Vol. 65 No. 7

Committee on Finance. - Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Bill, 1937—Second and Final Stages.

I move that the Bill be now read a Second Time.

Mr. Lynch

Is the Minister able to give the House any information as to when it is proposed to introduce the Bill dealing with pensions for serving men in the Army?

I hope to do so within the next couple of months.

Mr. Lynch

That seems to be a very long time. This thing has been delayed quite a considerable period. I agree it was delayed for a big number of years during our time, but I understand there is a certain amount of uneasiness in the Army in regard to this matter. They feel that it should have been introduced some time ago, and they are afraid that either the Minister for Finance or someone else is holding up the whole scheme.

May I take it that effect will be given to the scheme within the next couple of months, that the scheme will be really operative in the case of those entitled to pensions?

The entire scheme will be ready within the next couple of months. It is in draft at the moment.

Does the Minister think that it will be passed in this Session?

I hope so.

Question agreed to.

If there is no objection, I should like the remaining stages to be taken now.

Bill passed through Committee without amendment and reported.
Question—"That the Bill be received for final consideration"—agreed to.
