Vol. 65 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fencing of Cottage Plots.

Mr. Hogan

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state why the cottages erected some eight years ago at Ballyhugh, Gort, County Galway, have still their plots unfenced, and if his Department proposes to direct the County Galway Board of Health to have these plots fenced this year, so as to secure the tillage of the cottiers from trespass and destruction.

It is presumed the Deputy refers to eight cottages erected in 1934-5 at Ballyhugh which were the subject of a complaint by him to the Department in November last. I have taken the matter up with the Galway Board of Health and Public Assistance and called their attention to the need for repairing the boundary wall and providing efficient internal fences. The matter is now in the hands of the board's engineer.

Mr. Hogan

In view of the statement that the Galway Board of Health cannot find contractors, will the Minister consider the advisability of asking the board of health to have these walls erected by direct labour? The cottagers are in danger of having their crops destroyed.

That is a matter for the board of health and not for the Minister.
