Vol. 65 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Evicted Tenants.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the number of evicted tenants in the County of Cork who have made application to his Department for restoration to the holdings from which they or their people had been evicted, or (alternatively) for restoration to equivalent holdings, and how soon will effect be given to such applications.

Mr. Boland

During the 33 years that have elapsed since the passing of the Land Act of 1903, 1,282 applications for land were received from evicted tenants or their representatives in County Cork. Of these applications, 646 were refused after inquiry and 75 did not come within the provisions of Section 2 (1) (d) of the Irish Land Act, 1903, the evictions having taken place more than 25 years before the passing of the Act. 337 applicants were reinstated in their holdings or given equivalent holdings. 224 cases remain, and it is the practice of the Land Commission, as land becomes available for distribution, to take up and investigate such of these applications as appear to be still "live" and worthy of consideration.
