Vol. 65 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gaeltacht Knitting Industry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that a knitting industry, which has been successfully carried on in the Gaeltacht of Cape Clear, is seriously hampered by the dilapidated and insanitary condition of the building in which it is being conducted, and if he will take steps to provide suitable accommodation for the successful continuance of this industry.

The premises referred to in the Deputy's question are not and have not been in a dilapidated or insanitary condition. Consequent on an inspection last summer, however, negotiations with the landlord were entered into with a view to affording better lighting for the workers. Structural alterations for that purpose have been carried out. I am happy to state that these have effected a great improvement and will allow for possible extension of the industry. Further improvements have been decided upon and will be put into effect as soon as possible.
