Vol. 66 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Operations Under Moneylenders Act.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he will state the number of moneylenders in each urban area registered under the Moneylenders Act; the total number of complaints received regarding alleged contraventions of the Act; the number of persons prosecuted and the number convicted for offences under the Act.

The total number of moneylenders licensed is approximately 160. Of these approximately 120 are in Dublin, 20 in Cork, five in Limerick and five in Waterford. Eight prosecutions have been instituted under the Moneylenders Acts since the passing of the Moneylenders Act, 1933. In three cases convictions were secured and in the remaining five cases the Probation of Offenders Act was applied.
