Vol. 66 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gárda Síochána Recruits.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state how many new recruits have been admitted into the Gárda Síochána during each of the years 1934, 1935, 1936, and during the first three months of 1937.

The number of new recruits admitted to the Gárda Síochána during each year since 1st January, 1934, was as follows:—1934, 86; 1935, 170; 1936, 2; 1937 (to 31st March), nil.

I should like to know from the Minister whether, having regard to the increased volume of traffic and the increased population in the City of Dublin, he would consider the matter of reopening recruiting for the Gárda Síochána?

The matter is under consideration, but I cannot inform the Deputy as to when recruiting actually will be reopened.

I suppose we may assume that, when recruiting is reopened, political associations will not be a factor in the matter of recruitment?

It will be a matter for the Commissioner now.
