Vol. 67 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Subsidy on Salmon Exports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the loss sustained by fishermen along the Erris coast in North Mayo owing to the tariff on salmon entering the British market, and, whether, having regard to the circumstances of the people concerned, he is prepared to consider the granting of a subsidy equal to the amount of the tariff.

I am not aware of any adverse conditions affecting in a particular way the area mentioned by the Deputy. In any event the question of a bounty would have to be determined by reference to considerations affecting the industry in general. I am not satisfied that the payment of export bounty in the case of salmon would be advantageous to the fishermen concerned and I am not, therefore, prepared to consider the granting of a bounty.

Is the Minister aware that the President of the Trades Union Congress has denounced persons who wish to make a few greasy pennies by exporting produce to Great Britain?

That is a separate question.
