Vol. 67 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ground Rents.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that on the granting of reversionary leases under Part V of the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1931, to building lessees ground rents have been substantially increased in a considerable number of cases resulting in injustice and hardship to such leaseholders, and if he proposes to take any legislative steps to remove this grievance.

asked the Minister for Justice if he proposes to introduce proposals for legislation at an early date to amend Part V of the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1931, to reduce the amount of ground rent to be charged on the renewal of a lease under this part of the Act from one-fourth of the full annual letting value to one-sixteenth of the full annual letting value, and if he will make such legislation retrospective from 1931.

I propose to take questions Nos. 6 and 7 together as they seem to deal with much the same point. I am not prepared to consider any proposals for the amendment of Part V or, for that matter, any other part of the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1931, until the tribunal which is at present sitting has presented its report.

Can the Minister give any indication as to when he is likely to receive the report?

I expect to receive it shortly. I think it is already prepared.

Within two months?

I would say so.
