Vol. 69 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dromore Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that widespread flooding adjacent to the town of Ballybay is causing grave inconvenience and possible danger to public health in that area; and, in view of this, whether he will expedite the Dromore drainage scheme, the completion of which it is believed would abate this nuisance completely.

The Commissioners of Public Works have at present under consideration among their proposals for the drainage of the Dromore area the question of improving the river beside the town of Ballybay. The problem of devising a satisfactory scheme for the Dromore district is one of considerable engineering difficulty involving a close study of flood conditions over a long period in the area down stream of the proposed Dromore drainage district. It is not possible to state how long these investigations will take, but subject to other engagements they will be carried out as expeditiously as possible.

While recognising that the investigations for a complete scheme will take some considerable time, would the Parliamentary Secretary direct inquiries to be made as to whether some interim work might not be done to abate the particular nuisance referred to in my question, the flooding in the immediate neighbourhood of the town of Ballybay?

The whole question is under consideration.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary consider the matter?

It would not be helpful for me to answer the Deputy's question.

But you will consider the proposition?
