Vol. 69 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American Markets for Cured Mackerel.

Mr. Flynn

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will again consider the possibilities of further negotiations with American fish buyers with a view to the reopening of the markets for cured mackerel from the Irish Free State.

Merchants who previously exported cured mackerel have, no doubt, maintained communication with fish buyers in the United States of America where the demand would seem to be for fresh mackerel and frozen fillets thereof in preference to cured fish. In these circumstances, it does not appear that departmental action of the nature suggested would serve any useful purpose.
