Vol. 69 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Labourers' Cottages

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if, in view of the high rents being charged for labourers' cottages in the County Dublin, which are double the rents charged in adjoining counties, he will give special consideration to the cottage purchase scheme for County Dublin in order to make it attractive and acceptable to the tenants.

Before giving my approval to purchase schemes under the Labourers Act, 1936, the position in each county will be carefully considered and due consideration given to all objections to the schemes made to me within the prescribed times.

Is the Minister aware that these high rents were charged by the Fine Gael majority in the county council, with a view to obstructing the housing of the working classes in the county, and with a view to it being used as propaganda in order to show that Government money was too dear for carrying out the policy of housing the workers?

Is the Minister aware of that?
