Vol. 69 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage to County Mayo Pier.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that owing to the explosion of a mine which was washed ashore at Granghill, Inver, Erris, County Mayo, the landing pier and slip were seriously damaged, that the pier and slip are now in a dangerous condition, and that the inhabitants, who depend for a livelihood mainly on fishing, are suffering serious inconvenience, and whether it is his intention to have the pier and slip restored to their former condition.

It is realised that the execution of repair works on this slipway is desirable. I may say that this mine came ashore many years ago. A grant from Government funds has already been made available for this purpose and the county council have also agreed to make a contribution. For some time past the Commissioners of Public Works have been in communication with the county council with a view to securing agreement as to the method of execution of the works, and as to their subsequent maintenance. When these arrangements have been completed the works will be undertaken.
