Vol. 69 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages in Offaly.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if his Department sanctioned a proposal of the Offaly Board of Health for the erection of a number of labourers' cottages on sites provided by the Land Commission at Ferbane, Offaly, the date when sanction was conveyed to the board by his Department; whether tenders were invited and accepted; and, if so, what is the cause of the delay in carrying out the work.

The board of health and the Land Commission entered into negotiations for the purchase of certain lands at Ferbane, and on 7th May, 1936, no objection was raised by me to the purchase on the assumption that the lands were suitable as sites for the erection of labourers' cottages thereon. After tenders had been accepted for the erection of houses on the lands the question of the suitability of the sites was raised at meetings of the board of health. The matter of obtaining a suitable alternative site has been engaging the attention of the board. It is understood the board will have the question before them again next week.
