Vol. 69 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Superannuation Scheme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has approached either the Great Southern Railways Company or the Railway Tribunal in regard to the superannuation scheme contemplated by Section 11 of the Railways Act, 1933; if a scheme meeting the reasonable requirements of the employees of the company is in preparation or is likely to be brought forward by the company; or if his Department has any proposals to make for such a scheme; or, failing all these, what action does he propose to take to secure superannuation allowance for the employees of the company.

The provisions of the Railways Act, 1933, so far as they dealt with a superannuation scheme for the employees of the Great Southern Railways Company, have been discharged in that a scheme was duly presented to the Railway Tribunal, fully discussed before that tribunal, and reported on as not meeting the reasonable requirements of the employees. Direct negotiations are at present proceeding between the railway trade unions and the company with a view to the possibility of evolving a scheme satisfactory to both parties.
